Sommerreise, Péter Wolf’s captivating song cycle, is set to Péter Fábri’s charmingly witty poems, and is the reverse of Schubert’s epochal Winterreise. In Winterreise, a man laments in 24 songs that his lover has broken up with him. In the English-language songs of Sommerreise, the protagonist is a woman, the story takes place not in winter but in summer, the woman’s lover does not break up but disappears, the woman does not leave but arrives – and then all sorts of things happen to her, especially a new start in life;
